UK Dog Law — What You Need to Know Before You Get a Dog

Visible legal review note: Last updated: 23 May 2026. Dog law changes. Check GOV.UK and your local council before relying on any rule here.

Dog law is not the fun bit. It is the bit that stops your beautiful life choice becoming a council letter, a travel problem or a criminal offence. Start boring. Boring keeps the dog safe.

XL Bully ban and exemption status

XL Bully type dogs are subject to legal restrictions in England and Wales. Owners must follow the current exemption, neutering, insurance, muzzle, lead and transfer rules where applicable. The key phrase is “type”, not simply breed label. If a dog may be affected, read the current DEFRA/GOV.UK guidance before making any decision.

Dangerous Dogs Act: type, not breed

UK law prohibits specific dog types, including Pit Bull Terrier type, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro, with XL Bully restrictions added under current legislation. “Type” means legal assessment can consider appearance and characteristics, not just what the seller wrote on a form.

Microchipping

Dogs must be microchipped and keeper details must be kept up to date. If your dog is not chipped or details are wrong, you can be served notice and may face a fine. Moving house and forgetting the chip database is a very ordinary way to create an avoidable problem.

Council PSPOs

Public Spaces Protection Orders can require leads in certain areas, exclude dogs from playgrounds or sports pitches, limit numbers walked, and set fouling rules. These vary by council. Search your council name plus “dog PSPO” before assuming your local park works like someone else’s.

Travel after Brexit

Pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer used for travel to the EU in the old way. You may need an Animal Health Certificate and must follow rabies, tapeworm and route rules. Northern Ireland has its own specifics, so check current GOV.UK travel guidance before booking.

Tenancy law

Landlords and tenancy agreements still matter. Reform may shift how consent is handled, but renters should get permission in writing, check building rules and think about future moves. A dog-friendly landlord today does not guarantee an easy rental search later.
